"Our Nation was not founded on devotion to symbolic idols, but on principles, beliefs and ideals expressed in the Constitution and its Bill of Rights. American veterans who have protected our banner in battle have not done so to protect a golden calf. Instead, they carried the banner forward with reverence for what it represents, our beliefs and freedom for all. Therein lies the beauty of our flag. A patriot cannot be created by legislation."

–Keith Kreul, past national commander of the American Legion

                 Flag Desecration

The Republicans would like you to focus on fringe issues like mandatory recitation of the National socialist inspired Pledge of Allegiance and homosexual marriage, rather than real substantive issues such as their costly (in lives and money) War mongering in Iraq, the blatant usurpation of all of your liberties with the PATRIOT Act, and their profligate spending of your stolen tax dollars.

One of their “important” issues is apparently Flag Desecration.  This is a priority to pass an Amendment to the Constitution banning the desecration of the flag.  Never mind that the Constitution is not a document about limiting people, but a document about limiting government.  And that in only one place are the people limited by the constitution… and that was repealed!

No.  The Republic cannot possibly survive the rare times when someone burns the flag.  Shreds the flag.  Walks upon the flag.  Wears the flag.  Drives around with a shredded flag flapping in the breeze (Oh, never mind. That is okay.  Those are patriots.).

We can expect this frivolous Amendment will someday protect all State flags and the United Nations flag, the latter of which I had the great pleasure of wiping my shoes on at the Libertarian National Convention this June.

There is a lot of abhorrence to the deliberate defacing of the American flag.  Those who do so, certainly must be trying hard to say they have a problem with what the flag symbolizes (at least to them).  Maybe we should pay attention.  Because if this outlet is suppressed, first you can expect a rare event will become more common.  But, also persons who would desecrate the flag may instead decide to do something more violent instead.

Either way, this destruction is clearly protected expression under our Rights to freedom of speech and expression, provided the flag belongs to one of the desecrators (otherwise it is already a property crime).  As a Right, even if an Amendment were placed into the Constitution allowing Congress to bar desecrating the U.S. flag, people would still possess that Right, and Congress would lack the authority to pass, and the Executive branch would lack the authority to enforce such a law.  Not that that would stop them ... they have the guns, and you have a toothless piece of parchment.

If people were serious about protecting the flag, all you need to do is pass a law making it a $5 fine for beating up a flag desecrator.  Instead, we have to change the Constitution.  A document that no part of the government pays attention to in the first place, unless it is in their interests.

Wake up America.  You are being election year manipulated yet AGAIN, by a bunch of incumbent CONgressmen and the CONmander in Chief, who want you to ignore their colossal failure to do the job they were supposedly elected to do.  Never vote for an incumbent!

"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." – Samuel Johnson (aka, Mark Twain)

For those that disagree with me, my opponent Mr. Franks is a co-sponsor of this Amendment (H.J. Res. 4) that will for only the second time in the Constitution's history, infringe upon the actions of a free people.  And the first time was repealed.

"I would not amend that great shield of democracy to hammer out a few miscreants. The flag will be flying proudly long after they have slunk away."  – Colin Powell
